A filk of song with same title
Eternal apologies to Sarah McLachlan

~Another night, another performance. This night though, something is different, the bar is far more crowded than usual and the customers seem to be fitting in perfectly with the dark atmosphere the dim lighting has always provided. Some of them look rather rough, perhaps even a tad scary, but they are being very quiet and respectful. Respectful for one of the ladies who is scheduled to perform tonight, and there is no way any of them will ruin the evening by being unruly.

A few performers finish their sets, nothing out of the ordinary for the first hour or so. Then, after the second round of drinks, the crowd goes silent. No introduction is needed as all eyes intently watch the stage.

A gently swoosh is heard as the curtains are pulled aside revealing two figures, both perched on stools. To the left is Ping and to the right, Miho. Both of their heads are lowered at the moment, their faces turned slightly away from the stage, a microphone held gently in each of their hands. The music softly begins and Ping is the first to raise her head, her eyes not on the crowd, but on Miho...

"Hey, the class is over
It's time to start walking home
Why don't I just sleep over?
Don't want you to be alone..."

Miho raises her head now, not looking towards Ping, her gaze distant, lost in the darkness before her that is the crowd. And although her look is unfocused, there is something in those gold eyes that pulls at all in the room. Ping has become silent and is also looking out into the crowd, a lost look on her face.

"I never would have opened up
But she seemed so real to me
After putting up my facades
It's refreshing not to be
I don't have to pretend
She doesn't expect it from me"

Ping quickly turns back towards Miho, a pleading note in her voice as she sings the next lines.

"So, don't tell me I haven't been good to you
Don't tell me I should not have been there with you
Please tell me why"

Miho finally turns to look at Ping, joining her for the next line, their eyes locking.

"Nothing is good enough..."

Miho lowers her head slightly as Ping once again sings alone.

"Hey, Miho-san, could you please smile again
I can't tell if you're ok
Please just talk to me
Aren't I your friend?"

With a slow grace, Miho turns, looking back to Ping. They seem to have forgotten there was ever an audience present, and the audience for its part has remained utterly silent. Then...Miho sings again.

"No, it's complicated
It's not real love,
Just codes of programming
That make you feel this way
But, then why am I so afraid
That you could be my friend?"

They join voices for the next lines, and while their eyes are sad, there are small smiles on both of their lips.

"And I don't understand
You deserve so much more than this…"

Miho paused, listening to Ping, the small smile still there.

"So, don't tell me why he's never been good to you..."

Then offered her own reply to Ping.

"Don't tell me why he's never been there for you..."

They smile towards each other and sing in unison.

"Don't you know why is simply not good enough"

Now, Ping stands from her stool, taking a step towards Miho with each word she sings. The progression is slow and Miho watches it in silence, an almost hopeful look on her features.

"So just let me try
And I will be good to you
Just let me try
And I will be there for you
I'll show you why
You're so much more than good enough…"

Then, with the final words, Ping stands before Miho and wraps her arms about her in an embrace, one which Miho gladly returns. Noise surrounds them, the audience clapping madly, but neither hear them. And with the same gentle swoosh as it began the performance, the curtain closes.

Good Enough
Sarah McLachlan

Hey your glass is empty,
it's a hell of a long way home,
Why don't you let me take you,
it's no good to go alone,
I never would have opened up
but you seemed so real to me,
After all the bullshit I've heard
it's refreshing not to see,
I don't have to pretend,
she doesn't expect it from me

So don't tell me I
haven't been good to you,
Don't tell me I
haven't been there for you
Just tell me why
nothing is good enough

Hey little girl would you like some candy,
your momma said that it's o.k.,
The door is open come on outside,
no I can't come out today,
It's not the wind that cracked your shoulder
and threw you to the ground,
Who's there that makes you so afraid
you're shaken to the bone,
You know I don't understand,
you deserve so much more than this

So don't tell me why
he's never been good to you,
Don't tell me why
he's never been there for you,
And I'll tell you that why
is simply not good enough,
So just let me try
and I will be good to you
Just let me try
and I will be there for you,
I'll show you why
you're so much more than good enough
