Dear Erika
A filk of Dear Claudia
Much apologies to SouthFM
By Aisling

*A soft-spoken looking sort of fellow walks onto the stage, his head lowered, obviously rather nervous about the entire situation. He clears his throat and motions to someone off stage. A sigh is heard as a young woman walks out to join him, looking equally nervous. As the music starts, they both relax, closing their eyes as they begin to sing*

Dear Erika,
You should try not to mess with your best friend's love life
All of your time goes to somebody else, 'stead of your dreams
And you do it so selflessly
As if you have no other needs
A facade of apathy, but you do care what people say about you

*The pair raise their voices, pouring more energy and feeling into the lyrics*

I would make you see, you've got to spread your wings

It's true that you like to come off cold
Enjoy the sense of be-ing in control [1]
But you should know, it's all just a lie
You hurt deep inside

*Their voices drop, the woman's now slightly more dominant than before*

Dear Erika,
You drop feathers of grey with each sigh you breathe out
And in the end, you'll be without wings to realize your dreams
And you do it so selflessly
As if you have no other needs
A facade of apathy, but you do care what people say about you

*Again, their voices rise, a pleading, almost desperate note tangible with the words*

I would make you see, you've got to spread your wings

It's true that you like to come off cold
Enjoy the sense of be-ing in control
But you should know, it's all just a lie
You hurt deep inside

*Softly, the next lines are uttered, a melancholy touch to the duo's mixed voices. Yet, they both have small smiles lingering on their lips for the rest of the song, despite the sadness that enters their now opened eyes*

I will patch your wings, set you free to fly
And when you soar up high, I'll say goodbye

Dear Erika,
You should try not to mess with your best friend's love life
All of your time goes to somebody else, 'stead of your dreams
And you do it so selflessly
As if you have no other needs
A facade of apathy, but you do care what people say about you

Lovely Erika
You must find the will to fly
Gotta reach your dreams
Cause its not your fault I fell in love

I will make you see, you've got to spread your wings

It's true that you like to come off cold
Enjoy the sense of be-ing in control
But you should know, it's all just a lie
You hurt deep inside

Oh Erika
I will still love you

*And with the end of the song, they give slight nods to the audience before silently walking off stage, leaving a single grey feather in place of the microphone*

Alright folks, time for the original lyrics.

Dear Claudia
SouthFM

Dear Claudia, you should try not to sleep with your best friend's boyfriend
You've come so far since that time when you let your first boy in
And you do it so carelessly
As if you had no self esteem
A victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you
I will let you in before you break yourself

It's true that you like to sleep around
Enjoy it with your backside on the ground
But you should know that its not your fault
Your father killed himself

Dear Claudia, you leave pieces of you in each bed you lay in
And when you're done there'll be somebody else wearing your skin
And you do it so carelessly
As if you had no self esteem
A victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you
I will let you in before you break yourself

It's true that you like to sleep around
Enjoy it with your backside on the ground
But you should know that its not your fault
Your father killed himself

I will lay your fears right here next to mine
And when we close our eyes we'll be entwined

Dear Claudia, you should try not to sleep with your best friend's boyfriend
You've come so far since that time when you let your first boy in
And you do it so carelessly
As if you had no self esteem
A victim of apathy but you don't care what people say about you

Little Claudia
You must find another
You must forgive yourself
Cause its not your fault I killed myself

I will let you in before you break yourself

It's true that you like to sleep around
Enjoy it with your backside on the ground
But you should know that its not your fault
Your father killed himself

Oh Claudia
I will forgive you

[1] Being is hypenated so that it is sung with two syllables to have it flow better with the music and scan more correctly. And I already know that hurt is not two sllyables like father, but if you hold it slightly, it scans better as well.

Well, ladys 'n gents, that was my first filk. Hope you all liked it. I am already well aware that not many of you are going to recognize this song, it is fairly new and if it had not been for a fluke incident with a radio, I probably wouldn't know it either. And, despite the brain mush that was my cranial region yesterday, somehow, this worked its way out of the puddle that was my thought process. I am including a bit of commentary since the song might be unfamiliar to the majority and hopefully a few extra words might generate more feedback.

I was hesitant to even filk this song, since it already greatly reminded me of Erika somehow and got my mind to speculating given her past. The original seems like a possible teenage version of Erika, a younger, slightly naiver and far more vulnerable girl than we see in MegaTokyo today. A girl who had a rocky relationship with her father, no mother in sight and with his death, reached high school and desperately tried any means to know some sort of love, through any means necessary. A tragic girl...

Thankfully though, from what feedback I have gotten from a few who previewed the filk, my lyrics do not detract from the song, and are instead an embodiment of a part of the Erika we see now. Regarding the singers, I imagine the boy to be someone from Erika's past, someone who has watched her from afar, not unlike us in the forums, not to mention a general embodiment of all the Erika fanboys out there. The girl, well I had to let the Erika fangirl in me sing the song, since it was in large part due to that fangirl that the filk was ever done.

I would like to apologize if it is not horribly original, and in comparison to some of the filks that were turned out during the time of Grey Erika, well this hardly compares. Still, it was pointed out to me, do you filk a song just to let it look pretty on your HD? No, you don't. So, I didn't.

A final note: Thank you to all who read this, especially to my two proofreaders, ya know who you are. This is dedicated to all the Erika fanboy/girls out there, and here's hoping a certain one really enjoys it.
