They've Never Left

I was loggin' onto an IRC
With some Dylan on my screen
When a stranger logged on after me with a poet's mode and mien
Well, he was bored with story forums, where filks and jokes fall flat
"That's a tough song for filkin', would you like some help, newb?"
He pulled out faded keyboards, and two files to me he showed
And them Beatles songs starin' out o' that screenlight was solid filkin' gold
Then I noticed the stranger had no avi when he noted my Cheshire Cat
And knew there was somethin' strange about this chat

He wrote, "Filker can you make boards cry with your filks and verse?
Can you fit yer lines, did you stretch that rhyme
Can you make them trolls disperse?"
He wrote, "Newb, can you make fans feel what you feel inside?
'Cause if your great bard bound, let me warn you - it's a long hard ride

Well, he showed me filks of Tokyo, then he saw his bandwidth drain
He wrote, "This is where you log on, newb
'Cause I'm stayin' in archives."
I logged out of that forum's chatroom and I thanked that vet'ran for his words
He said, "You don't have to call me vet'ran, vet'ran -
The whole board calls me smurd"!
