Original song - Dar Williams, When I Was A Boy
I won't forget when Piro-san came to my thread, took my hand
I said I was a poet; I'm glad he didn't check.
I learned to rhyme, I learned to write,
I wrote short stories in a night,
We sang each others' songs out in the Miho thread.
And I remember that night when
I'm reading a new filk from some friends
And I hear somebody tell them that's been locked, someone should help them
They need to find another board to make their home.
When I was a bard, I almost got permbanned by Dom,
A dirty joke about his mom.
And I don't know how I survived,
I guess I knew the tricks that all bards knew.
And you can show me around, but I was a bard, too.
I wrote a few things you would like, just some random with her mike,
Writing sonnets, yeah, I never felt too small.
When newbies came inside to say, "How come haiku?"
Sometimes to stay, it's the first time they weren't talking to a wall.
And now I know what this forum's for, and the signs say less is more
More's on topic, more to see, more for them, not more for me.
That can't help me draft a filk, ten minutes flat.
When I was a bard, see that icon? That was me
Got a lot of comments some~times, see?
And I know things have gotta change,
They've got shirts to sell, they've got new girls to feel sad, they've got old girls to remove
But I am not forgetting
That I was a bard too.
'Cause in the threads where I would post, I'd go gently, like a ghost
Except when inspired, except when my fingers caught on fire and
I found a quick and easy way to tell you what I want to say
With someone else's words, like I'm a vampire.
I guess some kid replaced me soon, a newer voice, an older tune.
And I say now you're the one, you have words and I have none.
And he says "Oh, no, no, can't you see,
"When I was a n00b, my muse and me, we always talked,
And there were wonders everywhere that I walked
And all around were friends, now even when I'm alone that's seldom true,
And I am not so eager,
But I was a n00b too.
And you were just like me, and I was just like you."
