Don't mind me, kiddo...just trying to get a handle on your character!

Miko Mahou (songverse)

Italicized verses are from "Dog and Butterfly", by Heart.

(Refrain - wherever the song lines end with three dots (...), this is sung.)

"See the dog and butterfly ,
"Up in the air he like to fly,
"Dog and butterfly,
"Below she had to try ,
"And she rolled back down
"To the warm soft ground,
"Laughing, she don't know why,
"She don't know why,
"Dog and butterfly."

===========================
There I was with the old man,
Stranded again, so off I'd ran,

You don't know where you fit in,
Now you're on your own,
You often feel you're driftin',
Tired, lost, alone,
And somehow must atone.

A young world crashing around me,
No possibilities of getting what I need,

Is life like Kisokaido[1],
With bridges, forks, and hills?
And were there any highroads,
That would not have run ill?
The thought imparts a chill.

He looked at me and smiled,
Said "No, no, no, no, no child..."

Mitsuya-san, you smolder
With guilt and grief and woe,
Don't take more on your shoulders
Than what you really owe.
That's quite enough, gods know.

Well, I stumbled upon your secret place,
Safe in the trees, you had tears on your face,

Memory is a harness
We wear our whole lives long,
Memory reminds us
Of what we had that's gone,
And binds us with its thongs.

Wrestling with your desires,
Frozen strangers stealing your fires,

The miko bears a burden
That's deeper than the sea,
And even death's less certain
Than all the duty she
Must render her kami.

The message hit my mind:
Only words that I could find...

No words of your persuading,
Would make him stand aside,
And past you he went raging,
With anger in his stride,
And hatred in his eye.

We're getting older, the world's getting colder,
For the life of me, I don't know the reason why,

And history is repeated
Tonight outside the rave,
Another is defeated,
Resolute and brave,
But wracked by sullen rage.

Maybe it's livin', making us give in,
Hearts rolling in, taken back on the tide,
We're balanced together, ocean upon the sky.

And what will you be giving
Tonight to heal this shell?
How much will you be suffering
To rescue him from hell?
Only time will tell.

Another night in this strange town,
Moonlight holding me light as down,

On wings as soft as moonlight
Some nights you drift alone,
Through places in your second sight
Where damaged ones had flown,
And hurting, fell like stones.

Voice of confusion inside of me,
No begging to go back where I'm free,

So heal the lost ones as you can,
Be sure to think it through,
Reserve yourself, oh Mahou-san,
A little cure for you,
And keep your feelings true.

Feels like I'm through,
Then the old man's words are true...

"See the dog and butterfly ,
"Up in the air he like to fly,
"Dog and butterfly,
"Below she had to try ,
"And she rolled back down
"To the warm soft ground,
"Laughing, she don't know why,
"She don't know why,
"Dog and butterfly."

[1]Kisokaido: one of the two famous highways of old Japan. The Tokaido was the shore road, while the Kisokaido was the mountain road. The verse should work with either the Japanese or Anglic pronunciation. I think.
